jump

So, one of the big stories here in San Francisco is the fact that they wanted to put a ski jump on Fillmore Street. Yes, you heard me, they wanted to place a ski jump on a street in a major metropolitan city. Presumably because of San Francisco's notoriously cool summer days, Jonny Moseley and friends wanted to dump over 200 tons of snow onto a steep hill in San Francisco and erect a ski jump. They were going to have a competition and have it filmed by MTV. They had procured the proper permits to stage the event and was set to ski in San Francisco this Saturday. Today, they announced that the event was postponed until further notice. Mayor Gavin Newsom said due to the fact that there has been too much publicity and there are fears of crowd control problems.

I'm kind of disappointed. I was actually thinking about going to see it. It sounds like a great idea. Use the streets of San Francisco for something other than wearing out my truck's brakes. I'll probably have to wait for it to come around again. It would've been cool to see snowboarders and skiers jumping the city streets.

I posted some pictures below one is a conceptual picture of what the jump and the event might look like. The other is a picture of the street as it is.

All I want to see is a live rerunning of the car chase scene route in "Bullitt" on TV someday, driven by ace stuntdrivers through the City streets. God, that movie rules. May they never, ever remake it with Brad Pitt in the title role.

OK, I have to ask: Is that mammoth '60s-era Safeway store that appears right when Steve McQueen chases the black Challenger out of downtown S.F. and into what apparently used to be "countryside," but is probably now super-developed suburbs still there? That was the coolest-looking supermarket ever, even if you only saw, like, 30 seconds of it in the background.

    A pic for you Rekkid.

So that's the Marina Safeway. It's in a fairly affluent neighborhood called the Marina District. It is so named for Marina Avenue that runs in front of that Safeway and is the major thoroughfare in that area and also because there is a marina on that street where all the rich people dock their boats.

The Safeway was also referenced in a PBS miniseries "Tales of the City" by Armistead Maupin. It was THE place to pick up dates in San Francisco (particularly the produce aisle). Recently however it is still a pick up joint but only for the straight set. I hear the Castro Safeway is the new pick up market for gay guys and girls.

Speaking of the wonderfully flamboyant neighborhood known as the Castro, I remember a Simpsons episode where Homer, Mr. Burns and Smithers are in Cuba speaking with Fidel Castro. Castro mentions how beloved he is in the US, especially San Francisco.

"Castro: They named a street after me in San Francisco.

(an aide whispers in Castro's ear)

    Castro: It's full of WHAT?!?!?"

    Funny stuff.
